Leisure & Recreation
At St. Agnes Home, we know that keeping one’s mind engaged and one’s body active is absolutely necessary for maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle. That is why, while highlighting the spiritual, we also strive to offer a wide variety of physical, social, and educational programs and events to suit the preferences of all.
Explore New Interests
From cooking demonstrations to professional dance performances, scripture sharing to bowling, residents are bound to find plenty to pique their interest. Those who prefer intellectual stimulation enjoy a wide range of topics: travel and culture presentations, culinary tastings and crafts, even gardening in our raised beds in the courtyard. Our birthday parties, card games, Sunday doughnuts, and Friday Happy Hours foster friendships and great socialization. Residents who want to improve their flexibility and strength never miss our daily exercise program. Anyone who simply wants to relax and enjoy some entertainment is delighted by weekly movie matinees and frequent music recitals from a wide range of ages and talents.
A Child’s Touch
One splendidly unique aspect of St. Agnes Home’s leisure and recreation agenda is the incorporation of visits from the two- to five-year-olds at the Sisters’ daycare center on the same campus, the Carmelite Child Development Center. The children love to play Legos or to color with the “grandmas and grandpas,” to entertain with songs and dancing, and to share their smiles and love. Some of our residents even spend time at the daycare reading books to the children and helping where they can. It is a beautiful intergenerational exchange.
Out and About
Whether it’s a quick trip to Ted Drewes for custard cones or something a little more adventurous such as day trips to Forest Park or Eckert’s Farm, our scenic bus ride is a favorite activity for many. Our residents have ventured all over St. Louis in the St. Agnes Home buses. They’ve enjoyed gorgeous drives around Creve Coeur Lake, stopped to grab cookies and pray at St. Ambrose Church up on the Hill, gone shopping at Kirkwood Farmers’ Market, and enjoyed the cuisine at any number of local restaurants. Each trip brings a new delight!
Round Up the Family
It turns out our residents love to party…and so do the Sisters. Several times a year our social hall fills to overflowing as family and friends join their loved ones and the Sisters for extra special fun and entertainment. All ages delight in our annual Mardi Gras celebration, which is sure to include the duck dance and the hokey-pokey. Our annual Christmas Pageant draws out the best in our residents, giving them an opportunity to show their talents, while providing a beautiful witness to unity as residents, family, Sisters, and staff come together to tell again the timeless story of the Birth of Christ. Of course, homemade Christmas treats from the St. Agnes Home bake kitchen follow. Our most extensive celebration, our annual Germanfest, is complete with a German spread, a German um-pa-pa band nearly 20 strong, lots of dancing, and plenty of polkas!
